Platt/Whitelaw Architects designed this remodel to optimize the relationship of interior and exterior spaces, transforming the existing garage into a large, airy living room that opens its walls up to the back yard with a series of French doors. The interior of the original house was remodeled to continue the indoor/outdoor relationship.

Planted screens adjacent to the house allowed this concept to be carried through even to the master bathroom, where a sliding glass door in the shower provides access to a private exterior courtyard.

A new garage was added, as well as a courtyard entry to the front door. The entry vestibule has a high ceiling with clerestory windows on four sides that open up to provide natural exhaust ventilation to the entire house. They also bring natural light deep into the center of the living room.

The residents enjoy entertaining large groups of friends. The remodel has transformed a beach bungalow into an inviting, airy home with an open floor plan that allows uninterrupted flow between interior and exterior spaces.
