| Fire
Station #31 was originally constructed in 1960. This station
was scheduled for replacement as part of the City of San
Diego's efforts to upgrade their fire protection services.
The facility was enlarged to house the paramedic team and
reserve apparatus along with state of the art equipment,
for a total of 9,000 square feet.
The
design facilitates emergency response functions of the paramedics
and fire department.
Access
requirements from the Americans with Disabilities Act are
addressed in the new construction. The fire station is designed
with environmentally friendly materials that contain recycled
content and may be recycled more easily at the end of their
useful life.
The massing, architectural character, finishes and landscaping
of this steel-framed, stuccoed and tile-roofed facility
reflect the residential neighborhood it serves. Energy conserving
measures have been designed into the building envelope:
daylighting illuminates the residential and equipment bay
areas, and roof and walls are acoustically and thermally
insulated. Energy conserving mechanical and electrical systems
are also incorporated.
