Working closely with the landscape architect in producing the General Development Plan for this North City West park facility, Carmel Valley Community Park, Platt/Whitelaw Architects provided initial studies for building siting, size requirements and layout, contibuting conceptual sketches and architectural treatment for the recreation building and other ancillary facilities to be accommodated in the Park. Following City and Community acceptance of the GDP, Platt/Whitelaw developed its initial studies into conceptual design for the recreation center associated with tennis courts, basketball courts, swimming pool, playing fields, amphitheater, picnic and playground areas.

The recreation center design stresses responsiveness to the building's sloping site and interaction of interior and exterior spaces, providing areas where indoor activities can spill out onto adjoining outdoor areas developed for this use.

Platt/Whitelaw has gone on to lead an Architect/ Engineer team providing complete design services for this 22,000 SF recreation center incorporating lobby, a single 120 x 90 foot court gym, meeting room, crafts room, administration, restrooms, pool administration, locker rooms, gym storage and pool storage.
